Why is English considered a hard language?

It's actually not a hard language, even though many English speakers have that perception. Why they have that perception, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because of some of the unintuitive spellings ("Through", anyone?) English also has a large vocabulary -- lots of words to memorize. But I met a woman who knew several different languages, and she said, no question, English is easy.
