I want to work in video game development ... a programmer, actually. do you think this is a good career path?

This is definitely a good career path. You will want to learn as much as you can regarding programming. C++ would be the main one to learn. An easy path to get started and to get learn some of the basics is to try out a program called Game Maker by Yoyogames.com.
