How do you deal with people not really liking your husband?

There are two types of people...people who really like and enjoy my husband and people who do not. He is usually great when you first meet him...sweet, funny, and entertaining. But, once you get to know him, he starts exhibiting his argumentativeness and inability to consider your opinions as valid. He also likes to talk a lot about things that interest only him and bore the person he's talking with. The people that really like him laugh at these bad qualities and tease him mercilessly. He takes the humor very well and moves on with life. The others just really don't like to be around him...which includes much of my family and friends and even me sometimes. How would you handle this and try to make the most peace between him and other people? I don't like to bring him around other people because it becomes pretty stressful if they're the type of person who's not really going to like him. I married him for his good qualities and like to ignore the bad as much as possible...even though when he's stressed out, the bad way overtakes the good and even his close friends ignore him. But, despite that, his close friends love him more than anybody in the world.
